Beaded Vintage Kuchi Tribal Surma Dani (Cache Kohl) from Balochistan

This unusual beaded vintage Surma Dani (Cache Kohl) pendant is distinctly Baluchi - handcrafted during the early 1900's in Balochistan in Central Asia for Kuchi nomads.

Tribal women used long purses like these to hold small items, such as coins, fragrant herbs, or Surma (Kohl) - a natural eyeliner.

A removable cap allows access to the hollow chamber inside; this cap is attached by a small chain at its center to prevent loss.

A generous fringe of clattering charm-dangles hang below, making a wonderful sound with movement and scaring away demons.

Surma dani were worn buttoned to bodice tops, woven into braids of hair, as necklace pendants, or hanging from a belt at the waist. Please see images to appreciate the 3 integrated button-like flanges along the upper chains used for fastening.

A rich age patina remains, giving this unusual Kuchi tribal purse a glow that only the passage of time can create.
