Old African Tuareg Amulet Necklace - Handcrafted Tribal Jewelry
This unusual amulet pendant necklace was handcrafted by African Tuareg tribal jewelry artisans during the early to mid-1900's (pre-1960).
Typical of Tuareg jewelry, this pendant was skillfully and sturdily made; it does not bend.
The silver pendant has the shape of the moon - a symbol for the female aspect, and a motif used in the artwork of many tribal people that often depicts the moon.
The design incised into the silver is also distinctive to African Tuareg jewelry. Each line represents a clan member or tribal element of special significance.
Side chains are of more black onyx beads with a simple clasp at the back.
There are mild wear patterns and a warm age patina acquired over many years. It is unusual now to find pre-1960 Tuareg jewelry such as this. Collectible pendant.

About
TUAREG: The African Tuareg
consist of widely dispersed nomadic tribes known for their great noble
bearing. Sometimes referred to as the "First People," the Tuareg say
that they have inhabited the northern span of Africa for millennia - a
claim that history supports.
The Tuareg are undisputed masters
of the desert, skillfully venturing with aplomb where others could not survive.
Men and women hold equal rank with Tuareg society, with the men veiling their faces rather than the women.
