This classically ethnic necklace was handcrafted using porcupine quills, black spirit beads, and a large central Spindle Whorl Bead. The hollow porcupine quills are grouped and thread along the sides of the necklace between the black spirit beads. Spirit beads, also known as Vulcan Beads, were traditionally made from old phonograph records that were believed to hold the spirit of the person's voice that was recorded. Whorl beads are found in Africa since antiquity, crafted from local clay that is spun on a Spindle while being incised with pleasing geometric designs. This wonderful contemporary necklace has look and feel of old African Tribal Jewelry. Fair Trade Jewelry from Africa.
