Old Afghan Tribal Jewelry Double-Torc Necklace

This unusual old Turkmen Tribal necklace is called a Torc (Torque, Tawque) - a unique type of choker necklace worn in the tribal areas of Central Asia. The style shown here is sometimes called a springy torc, since it is made of sturdy wound coils that spring back into shape when twisted.

Each side is studded with a large, bright red glass bead and elaborate metal work. To wear a torc necklace like this one, gently twist the ends in opposite directions (one end up, one end down) to make the back opening just large enough to slip your neck through.

Then release the ends to let the necklace return to its usual shape. Fits average sized adult female.

Handmade 50-70 years ago in the Pashtun area of Afghanistan. A similar Collectible Museum Quality Torc Neckring is found on page 498 of the Seiwert's well-known book "Treasures from the Bir Collection."
       Size =  17-1/2 inches inches inner circumference, 20 inches outer circumference (1 inch = 2.54 cm)
       Weight = 19 oz
       Neck gap = 2 inches

       Material = Mixed metals; Glass beads
