Large Antique Turkmen Tribal Dagdan Amulet Pendant
This large Antique Turkmen Pendant is called a Dagdan after the sacred tree...others refer to it as "the 2-headed Eagle," seeing stylized eagle heads facing in opposite directions at the top.
Pendants like these are considered to have protective powers and are highly prized by the Turkmen Tribal women who wore them as necklaces of varying lengths. This is a magnificent example of this traditional tribal piece.
The multiple red beads sit in raised silver settings intentionally shaped like eyes...in order to thwart off any evil eye that may be directed towards the wearer. For centuries, red has been the preferred color for eye beads such as these, whether as carnelian stones or red glass. It is the red color that is paramount since it symbolizes the vibrant life force that courses through our veins, and wearing beads of this color is believed to strengthen that life force.
This large antique Dagdan pendant was handmade in gilded silver more than 100 years ago. The design is classic Tekke with stylized flames and birds visible in the gold-gilded patterns. Characteristic elaborate dangles complete this extraordinary piece of Antique Turkmen Tribal Jewellery. Collectible Museum Quality with rich patina intact.
