Antique Tekke Turkmen Tribal Jewelry Pendant-Collar Clasp - Collectible Museum Quality
This extraordinary old Turkmen (Turkoman) tribal pendant collar-clasp (Gulyaka) is a recognizable antique piece of traditional Tekke (Turkmen-Subtribe) tribal jewelry.
This extraordinary large antique silver gulyaka pendant was handcrafted more than 100 years ago in Turkmenistan, Central Asia during the late 1800's or early 1900's. It was skillfully made by Tekke (Teke) tribal jewelry artisans of gold-gilded silver and encrusted with vibrant red beads set in raised bezels. The oval bead shape is deliberate, intended to ward off the evil eye.
The open fretwork along the border of this huge Turkmen (Turkoman) pendant celebrates the rays of sun, with a rim of highly stylized rams' horns for protection. Gilded patterns celebrate birds wings, flames and floral designs that connect the wearer to the more ethereal aspects of nature.
The fretwork along the perimeter depicts a circle of fish in open relief. Fish are highly revered in Turkmenistan and in many other cultures, since fish swim in water - and water as a life-giving source is associated with the highest form of femininity.
The gulyaka is a classic piece of Turkmen tribal jewelry worn at the front of the neck by nomadic Turkmen women to fasten their garments together like an enormous button. Indeed, the back of this piece has a silver knob that is intended to fit through button-hole at the neckline.
Gulyaka means "neck flower." This style is also known by Turkmen as a gardik lakat.
This gulyaka is exceptionally well made in silver and does not bend; It is in excellent Museum Quality condition. A mild age patina remains, giving it a glow that only the passage of time can create.
