Naga Tribal Necklace with Handcrafted Vintage Conch Shell Disks
This unusual tribal necklace from Nagaland has a series thick old conch-shell disks that are strung on newer cinnamon-colored cording.
Each disk was handcrafted during the 1900's by the Naga tribe for use in their symbolic jewelry celebrating tribal alliances and the elements of nature.
The designs were handmade with the distinctive dot-incised technique of the Naga.
Although this is a simple technique, it is a skilled one that was perfected in Nagaland.
The old shell disks are thick and substantial, so even though they may look delicate, they are very robust and strong.
The lines seen on some of the images are this natural striations found in shell, not cracks. Each disk is intact, solid, and sturdy.
A nice feature of this necklace is that it is all organic, with no metal components to touch the skin or to potentially interfere with an energetic balance.

About NAGALAND: Nagaland is a remote mountainous region located in the farthest reaches of North-Eastern India bordering Myanmar (old Burma).
It is one of the few areas in the world where indigenous tribal groups and customs remain intact.
Historically, the Naga were described as warriors and prolific headhunters, although these practices have long since ended.
Today the Naga welcome visitors with song, dance, and unparalleled hospitality. ©
