Old Tuareg Silver Mauritanian Cross Necklace
This Old Tuareg Pendant was handcrafted in silver and copper by skilled African tribal jewelry artisans in Mauritania the 1940's. The pendant is a style of cross similar to the more common Crosses of Agadez.
Each cross style is associated with a different region or Tuareg clan group - in this case the region of present day Mauritania. The unique silverwork is of exceptionally high quality, with linear incised designs symbolizing tribal accouterments.
Pendants like this were given by Tuareg father's to their sons, who either wore them themselves, or gave them to their betrothed as an expression of purest love.
Women are very highly regarded in Tuareg society and are considered full tribal members in every sense. This unusual African necklace is a one-of-a-kind piece of collectible tribal jewelry from the Tuareg tribe of Mauritania.
