Large Old Ersari Turkmen Tribal Jewelry Headpiece
This extraordinary old Turkmen Headpiece was handcrafted in the early 1900's. The style is of the Ersari Turkmen Tribe - one of the 5 major Turkmen Tribes. The large center pendant with carnelian and gold wash is a style also found among the Turkmen Teke Tribe (another major Turkmen Tribe).
Sturdy Spear-shaped dangles with wound-wire stems are classically Ersari, adding dimension and sound to this beautiful piece as they clatter together with movement.
This is a large headpiece that was typically worn attached to a cap placed on the head underneath for support, rather than as a stand-alone piece. Many Turkmen headdresses are so large, that use of supportive caps underneath was almost a standard protocol for wearing them.
If you are planning on wearing this headdress, you may want to consider a cap for securing the edges in place. There are also loops on the sides for placing ties. Turkmen Tribal Jewelry Collectors will find that this headpiece makes an unusual wall display and conversation piece.
