Garuda Old Guardian Pendant - Handcrafted in Nepal of Cast Brass - Selection
This unusual old brass pendant is of Garuda - beloved deity of Tibetan Hindu's and protector of Vishnu. Half-bird and half-man, Garuda is believed to have the ability to overcome any obstacle or and avert evil. Wearing his image is said to amuletic powers of protection.
See 2 varieties of this symbolic pendant in the image drop-down menu. Pendant A represents the deity as he is often depicted, holding a "pearl" and surrounded by serpents (his favorite food). Pendant B depicts Garuda in flight holding a serpent in his beak, as it coils towards the ground. Handcrafted in Nepal in the late 1900's.
Pendants like this are replicas of even older jewelry - the ancient Thogchags. Thogchags were an early art form that pre-dated Buddhism in Tibet. Please See the informative article by J. V. Bellezza at the Thomas Cole website to learn more.
