African Tuareg Old Tribal Jewelry Tscherot Double-Pendant

A Tscherot (Tchirot; Tcherot) is an archetypical Tuareg Jewelry Amulet. Historically, the Tuareg are nomads who wander freely across the borders of the various desert nations in Northern Africa.

Because the desert (tenere) is so hot during the day, they frequently travel at night, using familiar stars as a reliable compass. A Tscherot pendant is shaped like the outline of a Tuareg man's torso when he is standing in the moonlight with his arms crossed.

Tuareg men and women are equals in everything, including their penchant for wearing elegant and symbolic jewelry. Although the Tscherot is typically considered a Tuareg man's jewelry, today women also wear this unusual pendant.
Tscherot are considered to be powerful amulets that guarantee a safe journey for the wearer through all life's journeys. They are always carefully made with Tuareg tribal symbols that frequently include important star patterns and constellations.

This unique Tscherot was handcrafted in the early to mid 1900's by Tuareg Tribal artisans in 2 separate Leather Pendants and incised Copper inlaid accents. The 2 leather pendants sit one on top of the other, with desert sand still clinging to them.

They hang from a short leather cord for securing on a belt or attaching for a necklace. A very unusual example of collectible Old Tuareg Tribal Jewelry.
