African Tuareg Tribal Jewelry - Vintage Amulet Pendant Necklace
This unusual necklace was handcrafted in Africa by Tuareg tribal jewelry artisans in ornate silver with brass accents.
This Tscherot pendant is vintage Tuareg jewelry from the late 1900's - not a new reproduction.
A Tscherot (Tchirot, Tcherot) is a traditional Tuareg tribal amulet that is shaped like the outline of a man's torso while
standing in the moonlight with his arms crossed.
They are
always beautifully engraved with Tuareg symbols that frequently
include star patterns and constellations familiar to the group.
Since the Tuareg tribes typically sojourn at
night to avoid the extreme heat of the daytime desert, they use stars and constellations as
their navigation guides.
Tchirot pendants with their incised celestial maps and landmarks are worn as powerful amulets
- an extra precaution to guarantee a safe night's journey.
Typically considered
a Tuareg man's necklace, Tscherot are now often worn by women as well.
This large vintage Tscherot was beautifully handcrafted in
silver and brass. Incised patterns represent familiar mountains and streams, as well as the configuration of the Southern Cross constellation.
It was skillfully and sturdily made; it does not bend.
The back is brass which has the unique signature of the Tuareg artisan in the native Tifinagh symbols peeking through a warm age patina.
The
neckband is more recent, handmade in the traditional Tuareg way. A vibrant band of colorful soft leather highlights the threads of the neck cord. At 35 inches long, the neck band is long enough to wrap around the neck for a shorter necklace if desired.
Excellent condition.
