Old Turkmen Ersari Tribal Jewelry - Large Gonjik Pendant Necklace
The large old Gonjik pendant on this necklace was handcrafted in the early 1900's by Ersari Turkmen (Turkoman) tribal jewelry artisans in Turkmenistan, Central Asia.
"Gonjik" is the Turkmen name given to these large square pendants that have been worn by tribal women as large necklaces for centuries.
This old gonjik has a colorful beads set in raised bezels, strategically placed to ward off the evil eye.
Long chain dangles with large bells hang from the lower edges, clattering together with movement for a wonderful sound.
The black cotton neck band is configured in the traditional way to support the large pendant while flattering the chest. The neckband is made with recent cotton. The medallions affixed to the neck band, however, are old Turkmen amulets.
There are some wear patterns, a rich age patina and verdigris in the crevices acquired after almost decades of time.
This was a skillfully and sturdily made piece; it does not bend. Collectible.
Turkmen Tribal Jewelry is notoriously large. Some say its impressive size represents the armor worn by Turkmen women when fighting as warriors in battle during ancient time.

About Turkmen GONJIKS: The gonjik (gonjuk) is a classic piece of Turkmen tribal jewelry worn as a necklace with the pendant hanging at or below the waist.
They were frequently sewn directly onto garments or onto long panels.
Gonjiks were often worn in pairs on either side of a coat's opening, or like this one as a long necklace.
