Turkmen Tekke Tribal Jewelry - Large Vintage Gonjik (Gonjuk) Pendant
The "Gonjik" (Gonjuk) is a large diamond shaped pendant that is worn by women of the various Turkmen (Turkoman) tribes. In addition to being beautiful, a gongik is also an amulet for protecting the wearer from harm.
Like most Turkmen Jewelry, Gongiks are notoriously large. Some say that the large size of Turkmen Jewelry is a tribute to the armor worn by Turkmen women when fighting as warriors alongside their men in battle long ago.
This old Turkmen Double-Gonjik Pendant was skillfully handcrafted during the early 1900's in Turkmenistan Central Asia. It was sturdily made and does not bend.
There is a large carnelian in the center, unusual gold-gilded patterns, and lots of oval red beads to ward off the evil eye. Long bejeweled charm dangles hang below, clattering together with movement. A warm age patina adds a glow that only the passage of time can create.
The double-pendant design, gives the impression of overlapping pendants and the skill of the artisan. This is collectible piece of Turkmen tribal jewelry is in excellent condition; perfect for any collection.
