Turkmen Tribal Jewelry - Old Qasli Bilezik Cuff Bracelet
This old Turkmen (Turkoman) qasli bilezik bracelet was
handcrafted in Turkmenistan, Central Asia during the early 1900’s. It is in
excellent, collectible condition, with a mild patina and gentle wear patterns
from years of loving wear.
There are 3 ornately-decorated qoshmahs, or bands adding
dimension and an impressive length. Each qoshmah is incised with gilded images
of stylized birds’ wings and flames, connecting the wearer to an ethereal
natural world. Much of the gilding has been worn away over the years, but is
still partially visible in places.
In true Turkmen fashion, 9 eye-shaped red beads sit in
raised bezels, intended to ward off the evil eye. Each terminal end has 7
“claws” or “fangs” that are said to be imbued with amuletic powers of
protection.
The qasli bilezik is classically Turkmen, often worn in
pairs. Turkmen woman prized them not only for their beauty, but also to shield
the wrists from injury – a welcome safeguard given their rigorous nomadic
lifestyle.
This old Turkmen bilezik bracelet was sturdily and well
made. It does not bend. It is a perfect addition to your Turkmen tribal jewelry
collection.
