Turkmen Tribal Jewelry - Vintage Ersari Cuff Bracelet
This vintage Turkmen (Turkoman) cuff
bracelet was handcrafted during the early to mid-1900's for the nomadic tribes
of Turkmenistan along the old Silk Road in Central Asia.
This is old Turkmen tribal jewelry
and not a new replica.
With its clean lines, sturdy
construction, and vibrant red beads, the 2-band style of this cuff is
characteristic of the Ersari Turkmen sub-tribe.
Red beads are said to not only invigorate, but when shaped
like eyes, they are believed to ward off the evil eye. Stylized claws on the
terminal ends are also a traditional Turkmen jewelry treatment, intended as
additional protection.
Consistent with Turkmen style, this is a tall cuff at 2-3/4
inches long. It is very slightly tapered to fit the arm and wrist nicely.
Mild wear patterns and warm age patina remain from years of time. This is a sturdily constructed cuff; it
does not bend.

About the TURKMEN: The Turkmen (Turkoman) are a tribal people
who have lived in the harsh steppes of present-day Turkmenistan and neighboring
Central Asian countries for thousands of years.
Turkmen jewelry is notoriously large, with pieces worn on both
the front and back of the body, as well as on the head, arms, and fingers. Some
say that the large size of Turkmen jewelry is a vestigial form of the armor
worn by Turkmen women who fought alongside their men in battle.
The five major tribes of the Turkmen are the Teke, Esari, Yomut,
Choudur, and Saryk - represented by the
5 stars and carpet designs on today’s Turkmenistan National Flag.
