Symbolic Old Turkmen Tribal Jewellery PendantThis wonderful Old Turkmen Pendant was handcrafted by Turkmen Tribal Jewellery artisans in the early 1900's of gold-gilded silver, carnelians and turquoise.
Pendants like these were traditionally worn on caps or sewn onto clothing; today they are worn as necklace pendants hanging from a simple cord, ribbon or chain. The shape is that of a stylized sitting frog - a creature greatly revered for its resiliency and association with water in this semi-dessert region.
Frog motifs are found in various forms of artwork throughout Central Asia, including on carpets, embroideries, pottery, and jewelry. According to the Sanat Art Journal, Frog representations in jewelry were believed to provide the wearer with protection against hardship and renewed vigor.
This old pendant has been lightly cleaned of tarnish, but much patina remains. Collectible, Museum Quality old Turkmen Tribal Jewellery.
