Vintage Tibetan 3-Jewels Large Conch Pendant from Nepal
This large handcrafted pendant was handcrafted in Nepal during the late 1900's using old Conch shell, red coral, Silver with metal with Tibetan tribal jewelry styling. The white of the conch is considered Buddha's color of purity.
The Nepal and Tibet are both landlocked countries, so any seashells were gathered from long distances, or collected from old geologic seabed. Conch is an especially prized shell in the Himalayas, used especially in making symbolic jewelry pieces.
The dark lines and you can in the shell are typical of conch from this region; they are striations of color that has settle through the layers of shell - the shell itself remains intact and strong as in this pendant.
The 3-circle motif in Tibetan Buddhism represents the "Three Jewels" -- the Buddha, the Dharma (Buddha's teachings) and the Sangha (community). The 3 Jewels, also called the 3 Refuges, that provide guidance and protection along the earthly path towards Nirvana.
The back is a delightful relief of floral scrolls with the symbolic pheasant and deer that are associated with Buddha. It has a large bail with a vibrant red coral bead on the front.
This purchase comes with a free black cord for wearing in the traditional style. The cord can be easily removed if you prefer wearing on a different cord, ribbon, or cord.
