About SWAT

The Swat (Udyana) is a remote lush Valley located in the Hindu Kush region of the Provincially Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan near Afghanistan. It combines a strategic juncture with the Indian subcontinent, China, and Central Asia.

Inhabitants are said to have migrated centuries ago from Persia, bringing a rich cultural heritage with them. The Swat Valley was already populated when Alexander the Great arrived in 327 BCE.

After throwing off Greek rule, Swat subsequently became a major Buddhist Center. For most of its early history, the Swat Valley retained its political independence, deferring to no outside allegiance.

Today, as part of Pakistan, the Swat region is mostly Muslim, and home to many Afghan Pakhtuns, or Afghans from multiple tribes.

Because of its strategic location, the Swat Valley was an important part of the Old Silk Road Trade Routes that brought a steady influx of goods, ideas, and commerce from cultures far and wide. It is not surprising, therefore, that Swati artisans borrowed from other tribal designs and techniques, yet developed their own distinctive jewelry style.
