Large Vintage Turkmen Pendants PAIR - Old Tribal Jewelry from Turkmenistan
Price is for pendants' PAIR as shown.
This PAIR of vintage gulyaka pendants was handcrafted in
Turkmenistan during the mid-1900's for the nomadic Ersari (Ersary) Turkmen
(Turkoman) tribe of Central Asia.
The overall shape is an homage to the sun, topped with fretted borders of radiance.
Gilding on the front highlights patterns of stylized birds'
wings and flames to connect the wearer with nature.
Large red beads set in raised bezels - a traditional Turkmen
flourish - were strategically placed to ward off the evil eye.
Tipped with charms, the chain dangles hang freely from the
lower borders, clattering noisily together with movement.
These Turkmen pendants were skillfully and sturdily made.
They do not bend.
Large double-bails on the backs allow for wearing these
gulyaka pendants on your favorite chain, ribbon, or cord. Gulyaka pendants were
traditionally worn at the neck, in the hair, or in pairs along either side of the body, often sewn onto clothing.
There are mild wear patterns and a warm age patina remaining
after decades of time.
To show relative size on a manikin, I have put one of the
gulyakas on a simple neck cord, and the other pinned to the hair like a
headpiece. I will include 2 of these neck cords free with purchase.
