Old Turkmen Tribal Jewelry - Large Silver Garma Headpiece

This elaborate large silver Garma headpiece was handcrafted during the late 1800's or early 1900's by the nomadic Turkmen (Turkoman) Tekke tribe in Central Asia. Headdresses like this were worn spanning the forehead, encircling the head with clattering dangles falling along the face and hair.

It was skillfully made of silver, gold-gild, and lots of eye-shaped carnelian stones set in raised bezels. The bead encrusted inter-linked pendants are sturdily made, and do not bend. This large garma was probably worn secured by the end hooks to braids of hair, head chains, or a cap for extra support.

Surface patterns of stylized birds' wings and flames are highlighted by the gold-gilding, bringing the wearer closer to nature. The eye-shaped carnelians are said to invigorate, while at the same time protecting against the evil eye.

This is a very well made old piece, in excellent, museum quality condition ready for adding to your Turkmen tribal jewelry collection. There is a renewed interest in the exquisite old jewelry from Turkmenistan. A recent book, Turkmen Jewelry: Silver Ornaments from the Marshall and Marilyn R. Wolf Collection celebrates this remarkable tradition.
