Antique Ersari Turkmen Silver and Carnelian Pendant
This one-of-a-kind Pendant was handcrafted 70-100 years ago by Ersari Turkmen (Turkoman) tribal jewelry artisans using silver and deep red carnelian. The shape mimics a stylized turtle symbolizing both renewal and abundant femininity.
Women are keepers of the water that is vital for all life; things associated with water (such at turtles) are also associated with with highest aspects of women - the givers of human life.
The eye-shaped carnelian is a common treatment in fine jewelry from Central Asia, said to protect the wearer from the evil eye.
This pendant is an excellent example of Ersari Turkmen jewelry which is understated, exquisitely constructed and beautifully balanced. It is a Museum Quality piece with a mild age patina giving it a glow that only the passage of time can create.
