Vintage Tribal Textile - Square Saye Gosha from Uzbekistan
This colorful Large Square Vintage Saye Gosha was handcrafted in Uzbekistan in the mid to 1900’s. The embroidery is a combination of traditional Uzbeki satin-stitch and couching, with a fringed border.
There are no apparent tears or soiled areas on this piece. The back corner has one brighter colored red swatch, which appears to have been part of the original design.
Embroidery designs are of star-bursts, tulip flowers, ornate figs, and rams' horns - all hand-stitched on silk cloth that is the color of pomegranates. A crocheted fringe of green camel's wool rims the bottom edges.
The lining is Russian cotton, a favorite choice in this region. Handcrafted Collectible Uzbeki Vintage Tribal Saye Gosha.
About Saye Goshas: Saye Goshas (segushas) are elaborate fringed embroideries used traditionally as functional decorations in the yurts and houses of Central Asia.
The embroidered motifs are a showcase for the talents and cultural identities of the women who make them, since they include symbols of heritage and tribal affiliations.
They are used to beautify the home by tucking them between stacks of textiles, hanging them on walls, or draping them above doorways. Square ones like this look terrific draped over the back of a sofa or large chair.
Today, Saye Gusha of all sizes and shapes are also worn as eye-catching tribal hip belts or shawls to accentuate the colorful tribal clothing.
